NEGATIVE.

All clear.

No viral load, healthy baseline white-cell count.

All was good.

Terrell looked at the little piece of paper, and then at the doctor, and smiled just enough to show his braces. “Thank you,” he said courteously and hopped off the table. His knees gave a little wobble then, and Colby grabbed his elbow, and together they prepared to leave the exam room where the doc had consulted with both of them and given them the good news.

“Now, you boys know what to do to keep those results negative, don’t you?” the doctor asked seriously, and Terrell nodded.

“Yeah,” he said, a little bit of emotion seeping into his voice. “Not have sex with anyone but him.” He nodded at Colby and then realized what he’d just said. Out loud. To a stranger.

A stranger who didn’t appear to give a flying rat’s ass.

“Yeah,” the doctor said, making a notation in his chart. “Well, monogamy is a perfectly acceptable way to stay disease free. You gentlemen have a good day.”

Terrell looked quickly at Colby, to see if he noticed that big fucking momentous thing that just happened, and Colby rewarded him by mouthing, “In bed!” and making Terrell giggle. Together, they laughed their way out of the clinic and into the stunning summer heat pounding the crap out of Colby’s car.

“Whew,” Terrell said, feeling about six zillion pounds lighter. “Dodged a bullet there!”

“Yeah, well, you know how not to ever even see that gun again, don’t you?”

Terrell wondered if the heat had fried Colby’s brain. “Well yeah! I just said! Don’t have sex with anyone but you!”

Colby squeezed his eyes tight. “Yeah, well, that’s great, and I’m going to have a little faith that that’s possible, T, but what if it isn’t? People break up all the fucking time. What are you going to do if you wake up one morning and decide my feet are too big or my laugh is too loud or there is something about me you absolutely cannot stand?”

Terrell’s stomach went cold and he suddenly had to pee. “I’ll never have sex again,” he said soberly, and he was completely serious.

Colby whapped him upside the head.

“What in the hell—”

And he did it again.

“What in the hell was that for!” Terrell asked, backing up against the window so he couldn’t do it again.

“Don’t be piss stupid, T! If we break up, you’re going to have another boyfriend—”

“No I’m not!” Terrell snapped.

“You are too—”

“The hell I am! I am not gay with anyone but you, do you understand that?”

Colby blinked like he’d said something earth-shattering, and then Terrell blinked because it occurred to him that he had.

“That is one hell of a thing to put on my shoulders, T!” Colby snarled, but Terrell wasn’t paying any attention to the fact that he was pissed.

“Oh my God, I actually said it,” he muttered, and Colby stopped whatever was going through his head and coming out his mouth and turned on the car (which was good because the heat was making them both
